polls. for the national polls mitt romney supporters it's time for the finger vision. president obama up by five points. that's the fox news poll. the gallup dayly tracking poll had been quite close recently. now gallup shows president obama up by six. even really quite ostentatiously republican leaning rasmussen poll gives president obama a one-point advantage nationally. basically across the board in the polls that matter, in the states that matter, the obama campaign is ahead. things could change. we've got the debate starting next week. it's a long way to go, it's politics. anything could happen. right now the obama campaign is solidly and consistently ahead. tactically what that means is the obama campaign has to convert being ahead in people's preferences to actual votes. since they are clearly ahead a good time to get those votes cast is right now. because thanks to early voting people are casting ballots right now. so this lead that they would in the polls can be turned into actual votes while they're still ahead even if they don't end up being this far ahead by election day. iow

be responding? >> it is interesting. if you peel away governor romney's position, there is not a lot of different speech in him and president obama. both iran and obama believe in supporting the opposition. the administration -- but romney and obama believe in supporting the opposition. i think this administration has recognized that the most important thing we can do is create a unified political opposition so that the when the sovereign regime falls, we will have a transition as soon as possible. without a clear exit strategy, which by the way it romney said it is how he would think about military affairs, the president understands we need to keep all options on the table and be cautious about it. there are many ways to make the situation worse, rather than better. we want to get the diplomatic contacts read so that there can be a smooth transition while also -- diplomatic context so that there can be a switcsmooth transition. this administration has been at the forefront on putting pressures on the regime. i am not sure that romney will read position is that much different. >> i w

a cartoon. mitt romney -- the u.s. should immediately bomb england. foreign policy with mitt romney. this is a cartoon that i had in my comic strip. we each have these -- i do not know. i am not sure if best and -- i promised i would not miss up your comic strip. we each do a comic strip so we are lucky as far as editorial cartoons. good to use the other side of our brands to read comics. i have been accused of making my way to political. this is my 9/11 tribute. it actually was originally a long strip. you have to turn your head to see it. i made it into an editorial cartoon. here is mitt romney having a candlelight vigil for osama bin laden. this is a cartoon i did the year after 9/11 about maybe some of the causes behind 9/11. this is also the year after 911. i call it the twin tepees. it marks the genocide that has happened. it was a reaction to some of the more excess of chest beating about 9/11. we never remember the other tragedies that have been on american soil. i do not really have anything to say about this. end. and then -- but if romney wins it, you would see them all extended. is there one that would have a better outcome in your view? >> you know, i think there's a -- there's a tension between two different things here. on the one hand, there's a sense that in the very near term with a weak overall economic performance continuing that raising levels of taxes wherever in the distribution may have some negative effects on economic growth. and then there's a harder long-term question, frankly, which is how tax rates on capital gains, on dividends which feed through a somewhat complicated channel by encouraging various kinds of saving activity and ultimately lowering the cost of capital to businesses and encouraging investment, how that translates into long-term economic growth. that is frankly a difficult chain to try to measure in any precise way, and consequently it's harder to be able to trace through the quantitative impacts on growth to follow through on channels for that. >> to follow-up on that, which plan, do you think it's problematic for the economy at this point to have taxes
